Before your child even steps onto the pool deck, you can help build their confidence in the water. Here are five simple things that make a real difference.
1. Start at bath time. Encourage pouring water over your child's head from a young age. Getting comfortable with water on the face is one of the most important early steps.
2. Visit the pool without swimming. Let young children sit poolside, dip their feet in and watch other kids swim. Familiarity reduces fear.
3. Use positive language. Swap "don't be scared" for "you're doing great." Children pick up on our feelings about the water — enthusiasm is contagious.
4. Let them lead. Don't rush a child into the water if they're hesitant. A few minutes of watching and choosing when to enter builds more confidence than being pushed in.
5. Celebrate the small stuff. The first kick. The first float. The first time they put their face in. These are huge milestones — treat them that way.
